Instagram is a social networking app that allows users to share photos and videos. You can follow and be followed by users, you can also tag friends, like posts, and comment. It is also widely used as a messaging app.
In June 2018 Instagram passed the 1 billion active monthly user’s milestone. With more than 500 million users on the platform on a daily basis. It is one of the most popular social networking apps with Facebook ( 2 billion monthly active users) and YouTube (1.9 billion active daily users) coming in ahead of it.
Who uses Instagram
By far the largest demographic for Instagram users is the 13-17 year olds with a staggering 72% of teenagers in this bracket using the platform. But 64% of 18-29 year olds are also using it. 40% of 30-49 year olds, 21% of 50-64 year olds, and 10% of 65+.
These figures tell us how popular this social networking site is and why so many businesses are using it as a marketing tool.
Advertising Revenue
Facebook bought Instagram in 2012 for $1 billion when it only had 30 million users, it was a wise investment. In 2018 alone it reportedly brought in between $8-9 billion.
Ad revenue from Instagram is expected to bring in 25% (2019) of Facebook’s ad revenue and will grow to 30% by the end of 2020.
Business Users and Instagram
Eight out of every ten or 80% of users follow a business. This means if your brand has an Instagram presence your audience is more likely to follow you and user engagement will increase.

Unbelievably a photo of an egg became the most liked photo with 53 million likes! It all started as a joke to try and beat the record set when Kylie Jenner announced the birth of her daughter (18 million likes) and it only took ten days!
As people, brands and businesses use Instagram daily it is not surprising that 100 million photos and videos are shared every day.
Average Time Spent on Instagram
On average users spend 53 minutes every day on Instagram. They use this time to scroll through photos, watch stories, follow new people and businesses, and send messages.

How we interact and socialize has changed beyond all recognition in the last decade or so and will continue to change and develop. Instagram is an app that will continue to be used as a way of interacting for many years to come. Not only that, with META revenues forecast to grow faster (12.19% per year) than the US market average (8.37%) people are now buying shares of Instagram through META.
